District Planning & Zoning Bylaw Renewal

The District Plans and Zoning Bylaw are 2 major city-changing documents that are currently under construction or being renewed. The project teams are looking for Edmontonians' feedback on these frameworks that will shape how, why, what, and where the City builds and grows based on the larger vision in the City Plan

ENGAGEMENT OPPORTUNITIES:

Don’t miss the opportunity to have your voice heard. There are several ways for you to participate in shaping these projects:

 District Planning Open Houses:

Online engagement workshops:

Engage with and provide feedback on the Draft Zoning Bylaw here.

DISTRICT PLANS:

Zooming in, the District Plans put the City Plan vision into action by creating 15-minute communities (<-- video). The idea is that no matter where you live in the City, the proximity to a variety of services and amenities (such as grocery stores, parks, shops, transit, etc.) are all within 15 minutes. The draft of this NEW policy (District General Policy) is available here.

ZONING BYLAW:

Every parcel of land in the City is classified under zoning bylaw, setting out everything from the type/height/size/location of buildings and homes, activities that can take place in that area (eg; if a home business or religious building are permitted in an area), how much space is allocated for parking, trees, landscaping (eg; requirements for decks), as just a few examples.

The Zoning Bylaw (the rule book for Edmonton land-use) is getting a major overhaul as it hasn’t had a comprehensive review since the 1960’s! The project includes rethinking how, what and why the City regulates zoning and land development.
