Residential Parking Program Update

I’ve heard from ward residents about concerns with capacity for on-street residential parking, especially since parking minimums were removed from zoning in 2020. The new Zoning Bylaw still doesn’t include parking minimums. The city is exploring a better way to manage this through the Residential Parking Program (RPP). 


As part of the Curbside Management Strategy, the City is updating the RPP to better prioritize the growing and competing demands for curbside space in residential communities.

One of the in-progress actions within the strategy is a review of the RPP. As it was established in the early 1970s, an update is definitely overdue and needed. Two components of the program are the Household Parking Permit, which allows residents within an RPP area to park their vehicles on the street, and the Visitor Parking Permit, which currently applies to visitors within the communities of Windsor Park, Oilver, Royal Gardens and Rossdale. 


There are currently 19 neighbourhoods with Residential Parking Programs - primarily near major destinations (such as hospitals).

While none of them are within Ward Anirniq, Edmonton is undoubtedly a growing city. Administration is currently evaluating the program’s criteria, household eligibility, as well as additional changes that may impact the availability for other neighbourhoods considering the RPP as an option. While the program is currently on hold until this evaluation is finished, recommendations will be presented to Council in early 2024.


Public engagement was completed recently and I’m eager to see the results from that! And even though the formal engagement process is finished, feedback and suggestions are still welcome and can be submitted through 311. This feedback will also be used alongside industry best practices and road design standards for any program updates.
