Statement on U.S. Tariffs

I want to take a moment to recognize the significant impact that a trade war with our biggest partners, the USA, will have on the local Edmonton economy. I know many are nervous and concerned about what this will mean for their livelihoods.

At a time when many are already experiencing cost pressures for day-to-day living, this is only going to make things more difficult. Additionally, businesses and workers involved in industries linked with trade will also be impacted. I have no doubt that the relationship that has been in place with our neighbours to the south is forever changed, and we will need to reassess our reliance on this partnership long-term.

This is a time when we can come together as Canadians to support one another. This is what we are good at and I have no doubt we will demonstrate to the world the strength of our communities. With these tariffs, it is more important than ever to support local businesses. We can all choose locally and nationally produced goods and services.

In the coming days and weeks, Council will be asking City Administration for an analysis of the impacts this will have on Edmonton and the region. My commitment to Edmontonians is to do whatever we can to work with other orders of government and within my role on City Council to mitigate these impacts.

With kindness and solidarity,

Erin Rutherford
