Construction Projects in the Ward

132 Avenue Renewal Project

The 132 Avenue Renewal Project (Fort Road - 127 Street) was started in 2020. It has involved public input, technical analysis, as well as following existing city policies and guidelines.

The project is now moving into the construction stage with the section between 97 Street and 107 Street starting this spring. During construction in 2023, this section will be closed to all traffic.

Residents, stakeholders and businesses will have access to their properties via side streets and back lanes. Before construction you can also expect to see preparation work such as surveying, tree trimming or removal, and utility work.

The project scope includes:

  • Road reconstruction - including curbs and gutters

  • Additional sidewalks, bike paths, and traffic calming measures

  • Signal upgrades

  • New street lights

  • New trees and landscaping

The total project (Fort Road - 127 Street) is expected to finish in 2027. To stay informed of the latest developments, you can sign-up for updates here

Neighbourhood Renewal

For those who live in Calder, Neighbourhood Renewal work will also continue on the west-side of the neighbourhood the first week of May 2023, weather permitting. Construction notifications will be delivered to impacted residences before work resumes.

124 Street Renewal

Year #2 construction will begin in April 2023, with planned work on the west side of 124 Street (between 111 Ave and 118 Ave). This includes all concrete and road work as well as landscaping and streetscaping

Yellowhead Freeway Conversion Program

Turning Yellowhead Trail into a freeway is no easy feat!

It is called a ‘program’ because of the sheer volume of projects that fall within scope - from work on Yellowhead proper to network impacts off the corridor. Several projects are in different stages along the corridor.

Two of the major sections are within Ward Anirniq.

1. 156 Street - St. Albert Trail

The construction of this section is well under way and some big changes are coming this spring with the closure of the intersection at 149 Street.

Starting April 15, 2023, left turns to and from Yellowhead Trail at 149 Street will no longer be allowed.

Also, 149 Street northbound traffic approaching Yellowhead will be detoured to 142 Street via 124 Avenue (temporary detour to accommodate construction activities).

The two lanes of traffic along Yellowhead Corridor will be kept open for travel both east and west. Business and emergency access will be maintained at all times. Please watch for and follow the detour signage that will be posted around this intersection.

2. St. Albert Trail - 97 Street

The St. Albert Trail to 97 Street section is currently in the design stage. Engagement on the designs for this section will happen in 2023.

Proposed changes for this section of Yellowhead Trail include:

  • Removal of traffic signals and direct accesses to Yellowhead Trail between St. Albert Trail and 97 Street

  • Construction of 2 new interchanges at 127 Street and 121 Street

  • A connection from 121 Street and 107 Street to the new interchange to provide all-directional access to Yellowhead Trail

  • Introduction of new service roads to manage traffic flow into residential and business neighbourhoods

There will be a significant traffic detour on 127 street and Yellowhead Trail starting this summer. I’ll keep residents posted as more details are available.
