Property Assessments

Edmonton property owners soon will receive their property assessment notices in the mail. Unlike income taxes collected by the provincial and federal governments, which are based on how much income you earn, property taxes are tied to the asset that you own (i.e. your property). All properties within the city are assessed annually for their market value. This is provincially legislated under the Municipal Government Act.

This video outlines how the City assesses your property and calculates your property taxes. 


Property Assessment Notices are sent out in January, Property Tax Notices go out in May, and then payments are due June 30 (unless you set up monthly payments).

When you get your property’s assessment in the mail this month, make sure to review your property’s new assessed value. 


Here are some helpful links if you have questions or concerns: 

  • Check out MyProperty tool to see details specific to your property, and to compare it to similar properties within your neighbourhood 

  • If you disagree with your property’s assessment, you can file a formal complaint with the Assessment Review Board. The deadline for this will be on your latest assessment notice

  • For seniors, there is assistance available through the Seniors Property Tax Deferral Program by the Government of Alberta
